Shadowboxes are a great way to display keepsakes beyond photos that have a significant meaning to you. A shadowbox can be a great way to show off mementos that are associated with a particular memory, event, or time period of your life. When you put mementos in a shadow box though, you don't want to ruin them with glue, you just want to be able to display them.

1. Get Your Supplies Together

The first thing you need to do is get together all of the mementos that you think you want to put in your shadow box. Once you have your mementos together, you need to gather the supplies that will help you put your box together.

You need a piece of cardboard that will fill the frame of your shadow box. Next, you need colored paper for the background of your shadow box as well as paper glue (for the paper, not your mementos). Then, you need pins, a needle, and some magic stretch string.

2. Take The Frame Apart

Next, you are going to want to take the frame apart. Open it up and remove the foam lining that is in the back of frame. You are going to use the lining to cut the cardboard to the right size. Place the lining on top of the cardboard and use it to trace the shape onto the cardboard. Then cut the cardboard so it's the same size as the lining. You will use the cardboard as your backdrop.

3. Decorate the Cardboard

Now it is time to decorate the cardboard. You have a lot of flexibility with how you decorate the cardboard. You can wrap it up with wrapping paper. You can paste simple or complex scrapbook paper to the cardboard backdrop. You can make a collage out of pictures. You can add embellishments, like a lace trim. Choose a background that will complement the objects you want to put in your shadow box.

4. Decide Where You Want the Items to Go

Once the backdrop is complete, get out your items and arrange them on the backdrop. Move them around and figure out where you want the items to go. Once you know where you want the items to go, it is time to use that string and needle.

5. Place the String

Thread the needle with the magic string. It's "magic" because it is transparent and hard to see. Make a hole with the needle above where you want the item to go and run the string down to the bottom of the where you want the item to go. Thread the string through the back of the board, and run the string across the top of the backboard once again. Then tie the string off.

6. Place the Items

The string is designed to hold your items in place, so make sure that it is taut and tight. Take the string and lift it up just a little bit. Place the item you want to go on the board under the string. Adjust the placement so that it is just right. You have now hung up an item on your shadow box without using glue.

When you have placed string for all the items you want on the backdrop, place the liner and the cardboard backdrop in the shadow box. If you have any items that you want to stand up in the shadow box, place them in after you have the backdrop secure. Put the glass on the shadow box, and hang it up!
