Not all smartphones are cheap, and if the investment matters to you or would set you back if you had to pay again, it's best to maintain your phone on a regular basis. This means protecting, cleaning, and running a few processes to keep the system physically and digitally superb. Here are a few maintenance points to help you make the most out of your smartphone investment.

Slap It In A Case

Smartphones are handheld devices, and hands are clumsy. They can get slippery, they can get tired, and they can twitch. Sneezing can send a phone flying across the room or crushed in the palm of a strong hand, and life is full of surprises to either make you let go of your phone just enough for it to slide away or completely drop it on the ground.

Just put it in a case.

No matter how sturdy the phone manufacturers claims their new device may be, it's a lot safer inside a second shell of plastic, metal, or most successfully silicone. You can go with cases that have mostly aesthetic appeal, but at least get some corner bumpers made of some sort of rubber to absorb shock.

A Screen Protector Would Be Nice, Too

To use your phone, the screen needs to be in good shape. Although part of the screen touch detection involves heat sensitivity and not so much brute force, scratches and corrosion on the screen makes it harder for any input to work.

Screen replacements are expensive. They shouldn't be, since screen aren't very expensive, but you need confidence with opening up small electronics and a steady hand to set the screen--often a thin piece of glass that can break during installation--into the right place with adhesive.

The case they you're hopefully getting from the next section can protect from cracks and shatters if there's silicone just a bit higher than the screen level, but scratches that make the screen harder to read and sometimes use must be protected with a phone screen protector.

Screen protectors are layers of clear material that seal on top of the screen. They can be bought to fit specific phone models or in bigger sheets that can be cut to a custom size. You should also get a screen cleaning kit, since you need to wipe off any dust, fingerprints, or other residue unless you want preserved nastiness under the screen protector.
