If you have a spare bedroom, consider yourself very lucky! One of the great aspects of having an extra bedroom is that you can use it for multiple purposes. And, if you've chosen to decorate the guest room with a cowboy theme, you will probably have a lot of fun collecting the decor that you will use to make it unique and attractive. Here are some ideas for you to consider as you decorate.

The Walls - When you think of a cowboy room, you probably think of a rustic theme.

  • Consider wooden paneling. This will provide a warm feeling to the room and will definitely lend itself to the cowboy theme.
  • Another idea is to do faux painting to make the walls look like leather or suede.
  • Wallpaper would be another really fun idea. Paper with western hats, boots, stars, spurs and or horses would all be good choices.

The Furniture - Consider the purpose of the room as you shop.

  • A good place to start would be with the selection of the bed. Of course, the size of the room will help you determine the size bed you want. If you want something truly original, think about selecting a bed that looks like an old wagon, complete with wagon wheels.
  • If you also plan to use the room as a library, think of putting a couple of comfortable chairs in the room with a table between them so that you can add a good reading lamp.  Denim or leather would be good choices for the upholstery. A bookshelf would be good, too. If there's enough space, bean bag chairs with fabric that looks like cow hide would be a fun touch.
  • If you're using the room as an office, consider buying an antique roll top desk for your work area.  When guests will be using the room, you can simply close the top of the desk.

The Decor - Think about what you would find in old western movies.

  • Think about purchasing bright red sheets and pillowcases and using a comforter made of blue denim as the spread. The great part about denim for your comforter is that it wears well, and even after many washes it will still be very attractive. You may also be able to find queen comforter sets with a cowboy theme. Mixing fabrics like lace, more denim, gingham, flowers, and calico would be great for throw pillows to go against the regular pillows. For your bedskirt, consider selecting one of the fabrics you have used for your throw pillows.
  • Large posters from old western movies would be good. Another thought would be to frame pictures of movie stars like Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Clint Eastwood and John Wayne.
  • Old guitars, cowboy spurs, horseshoes, stars and lassos on the walls would be great touches, too.

Think about shopping at antique stores, thrift stores and novelty shops for your cowboy decorations.
